Gluten-Free Travel: CASA OAXACA (Oaxaca City, Mexico)

A visit to Oaxaca City, Mexico in May 2024 found our group dining at Casa Oaxaca. While older menus online don’t show this, I was relieved to find the menu gave a guide to dishes that were gluten-free, vegan, etc.

This downtown restaurant is near the Botanical Garden and a gold-decorated cathedral. We were unable to take advantage of dining on the rooftop, though my husband and I had a coffee there after dinner. It looks out on the church and the square.

After sitting down we were treated to a table-side homemade salsa and one of our group had also ordered the table-side guacamole. The salsa had a unique flavor to what our Tex-Mex restaurants serve in San Antonio and it was an interesting cooking demo for our interested foodies.

This was the only restaurant that we ate at in Oaxaca that had a guide on the menu to dishes that were gluten-free. I was even able to order a vegan “postre” or dessert that I could feel comfortable was gluten-free AND dairy-free.

Several of us ordered different fish prepared with different sauces. Being close to the Pacific Coast we felt we needed to take advantage of the freshness. Unfortunately, I preferred the preparation my husband ordered so my fork did wander over a few times. My fish, however, was also excellent.

So if you are looking for a restaurant that is a cut above the others for local cuisine, I would recommend Casa Oaxaca.
