Gluten-Free Travel: Harlow, Portland, Oregon
I need to mention our dining experience at Harlow. It was recommended by my offspring, who particularly crave the Mushroom Scallion Biscuit which is, of course, gluten-free. I didn’t expect the mushrooms to be baked into the biscuit, but it made for a savory treat.
The front window advertises that everything is 100% gluten-free. It is also vegan so I didn’t need to worry about dairy. I avoided non-dairy “cheese” until recently, but the nut cheeses I have recently discovered like Miyoko’s and Treeline French-style Cashew Cheese have changed my mind. I have used Daiya cheese, which was in the Hawthorne Mac and Cheese. My dish had a jalapeño cashew sauce. Yum.
I should have tried the GF Harlow Wrap or the Grilled Tofu Banh Mi like my kids as those are something I cannot usually have. They did share the biscuit with me, but they weren’t as generous with their sandwiches. (Pick any emoji that seems slightly sad – Ha).
My kids usually go to Harlow’s Southeast location, but we went to the Northwest location as we planned to go to the Portland Rose Garden in Washington Park after lunch. The Portland Rose Festival ended a few weeks before our visit and though the roses were perhaps past peak, it was still lovely to see all the colors and varieties.
I could have tried one of the gluten-free breweries in Portland (Mutantis Brewery or Ground Breaker), but sorry guys, I don’t really like beer. I did consider visiting one of the GF bakeries like Gluten-Free Gem Bakery, which must really mean business since it has GF in its name. Sorry again, but this Nutrition Nerd rarely eats cakes and pastries. They may be gluten-free, but they aren’t calorie-free! Yes, I am a fun-sucker.
I’ll keep my kids looking for GF gems and report back. You can keep looking as well. Find Me Gluten Free
Enjoy ya’ll!
