MIXTLI (San Antonio, Texas)

Having just returned from Oaxaca, Mexico, I was afraid that I would be eating the same food at this special experience, but I was wrong. I actually thought that Mixtil did it better!

Mixtli, “a progressive Mexican culinaria,’ offers seasonal menus throughout the year and a pre-paid ticket is required to experience this special 7-course meal. Mixtli, pronounced “meesh-li”, as I finally figured out, means “cloud” in the ancient Aztec dialect of Nahuatl and “seems to represent not just the influential memories of Mexico but also the modern winds of change.”

This was our 43-year anniversary treat to ourselves. We started our first course in their small, cloud-filled bar, so this might be a less expensive option to enjoy the crafted cocktails with no reservation required.

When purchasing your ticket you are asked to report any special dietary considerations such as gluten intolerance. There were a few hiccups as I didn’t feel the need to report that I couldn’t eat scallops. An attentive server noticed I wasn’t eating the scallop and a substitution was quickly found even though I told them it wasn’t necessary.

Much to my husband’s chagrin, I got two pieces of lamb which was supposed to compensate for the fact I couldn’t have the puff pastry on the accompanying potato mixture. Being the wonderful wife that I am, I gave him one of the pieces of lamb to stop his whining. Don’t tell him, but it wasn’t that big a sacrifice as I was already feeling full. I had already given him my scallop after all so I guess he’ll keep me for another 43 years!

I can’t say that I was totally confident that I could eat freely as the dessert was listed as ice cream. However, I did appreciate that they asked for dietary preferences and seemed very willing and knowledgeable about how to accommodate them. They didn’t seem upset even if the modifications weren’t stated ahead of the evening as is preferred by the restaurant.

The atmosphere was modern, casual and relaxed. So relaxed that our dining experience took 3 hours. But it was a relaxing and informative time with each dish being served along with the history of it’s origin.

Mixtli was a James Beard finalist for Outstanding Restaurant in 2024 and has often been picked as number one by our local newspaper food writers. This is definitely an unforgettable experience.
